Mega-projects and mega-events: evaluating Vancouver 2010 stadium and convention infrastructure

This paper evaluates two infrastructure mega-projects connected to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver’s downtown peninsula: renovation of BC Place Stadium and Vancouver Convention Centre expansion. These projects correspond categories often constructed alongside sporting mega-events with intended tourism development legacies that have a history financial underperformance. Touching upon literatures concerning mega-events, event leveraging, urban development, as well public finance sport convention venues, this work focuses on fiscal impacts opportunity costs for venue site locations where there are already high property values, aim providing lessons comparable future mega-event hosts contemplating similar event-related mega-projects. In addition arguing alignment design efficiently maximize long-term operating returns portfolios article highlights location within host city shapes government investors cost overruns meet fixed deadline can undermine what may other be sustainable structure. While mega-event-related stadium or centre is at significant risk becoming loser when considering both capital costs, sub-optimal platform maximising an portfolio, does not case.
